The Importance of Organic

So you have a couple of options if you want to be found online. The first is to pay a search engine for Ad Spots. We’ve all seen those; they’re the search hits at the very top of the page that look like spam and are sometimes relevant to what your search query is, sometimes not-so-much. Either way, most of us don’t actually click on them.

The next option is the “Organic” search results, meaning those results that are the closest likely match in reference to what your directed request was. These are what most people click on when they send out a search request, and they fall directly below the paid ad spots.

The problem? You’re not on that first page of search results, based on a search term you want to be found under. Oiy, we understand your pain and we’re here to solve that problem with you.

Let’s assume you’ve got your search tags, you’ve got your Google Places validation and you’ve even got a blog. Awesome! So what’s the next step to ensuring that your website is being found online? (and not somewhere on the 5th page of search results which no soul actually looks at)

You may or may not be aware that most of the searching Google’s “spiders” are doing, is on the main page of your website. If you’re not sure of what a search engine “spider” is, it’s the part of a search engine’s technology that is responsible for collecting and storing relevant website information. In most cases, these spiders aren’t scratching the surface of your website’s sub-pages. So while you may have phenomenally relevant information strewn throughout your entire site, if it’s not on your main landing page, it’s likely not getting picked up by search engines, or similarly, your website is being over shadowed by your competitors’ sites that have all that great info on their main page, and then some. BUMMER.

So how do you get in the game? The equation to being found is relatively simple (minus all the tech geek lingo) and it looks like this:  your company’s main page + all industry-relevant keywords = higher organic search-request hits. This means you get found at a higher frequency. So while you may be blogging away on a sub-page of your website, while you may be wringing out all of what social media has to offer you and you may even be keen to what search engine tags you need to embed into your website; you can be garnering a greater market share by simply weaving those important keywords into your main landing page, instead of blogging them away on a sub page or worse, not incorporating them at all. *GASP*

Stop SOPA/PIPA!

It would suck to see this right? Well that’s whats happening with SOPA/PIPA.

If you don’t know what this means read on. This brief taken from from Wikipedia explains it and why you should be very, very concerned.

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is a law (bill) of the United States proposed in 2011 to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods. Proposals include barring advertising networks and payment facilities from conducting business with allegedly infringing websites, barring search engines from linking to the sites, and requiring Internet service providers (ISP) to block access to the sites. The bill would criminalize the streaming of such content, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

User-content websites such as YouTube would be greatly affected, and concern has been expressed that they may be shut down if the bill becomes law. Opponents state the legislation would enable law enforcement to remove an entire internet domain due to something posted on a single blog, arguing that an entire online community could be punished for the actions of a tiny minority. In a 1998 law, copyright owners are required to request the site to remove the infringing material within a certain amount of time. SOPA would bypass this “safe harbor” provision by placing the responsibility for detecting and policing infringement onto the site itself.

Lobbyists for companies that rely heavily on revenue from intellectual property copyright state it protects the market and corresponding industry, jobs, and revenue. The US president and legislators suggest it may kill innovation. Representatives of the American Library Association state the changes could encourage criminal prosecution of libraries. Other opponents state that requiring search engines to delete a domain name begins a worldwide arms race of unprecedented censorship of the Web and violates the First Amendment.

On January 18, English WikipediaReddit, and several other internet companies coordinated a service blackout to protest SOPA and its sister bill, the Protect IP Act, an estimated 7,000 smaller websites either joined in or posted some kind of protest. Companies, including Google, posted links and images in an effort to raise awareness. A number of other protest actions were organized, including petition drives and boycotts of companies that support the legislation.

Donating a $10,000 Website to Charity

It’s that time of year when goodwill is running high and you just feel…well charitable. How could you not with the lights and the tree’s and the tinsel and the ho, ho, ho’s everywhere?

So in the spirit of the season, Webology  playing Santa and donating a $10,000 website to charity.

This website will be a fully optimized, completely customized site with all the SEO bells and whistles to help drive traffic, custom design elements including customized QR codes, Facebook banner ad’s customized email signatures and all the social media integration it can handle.

The charity can use the donation to create a new website for their own charity or they can sell it, auction it or just put it under the tree and see what happens…

However, there’s a slight problem…  we don’t know who to donate this website too! When we went looking we discovered there are literally thousands of deserving charities out there. All of them needing donations. All of them deserving…

So we’re reaching out to our connections, friends and followers and asking them. ‘Which charity do you think we should choose to donate this $10,000 website to?”

Moves Like Jagger

Some things never seem to go out of style.  Same thing for your business right? You do what you do well, it’s worked in the past, so you keep doing it.

Well the same could be said for those slick dance moves that you used to slay them on the dance floor back in the day. You might have wowed them back when, but they’re a little woeful right now…

If you’re trying to drive business with an ad in the local newspaper and a coupon in the mail, and that’s worked for you in the past, then fantastic. Good for you. Maybe that will continue to work for you.

Odds are your competitors aren’t just relying on snail-mail and sandwich boards.

“But wait,” you say “I’ve got a Facebook page and I use email flyers!” Again, that’s fantastic and if that’s working for you, great! But again, what are the odds that your competition is several moves ahead of you. Shaking and baking their way through a new digital dance floor, hard wired in to their customers, knowing what they want with a tap and a tweet.

Meanwhile the newspaper with your ad sits in the recycling bin…

Bummer.

But, take heart. There’s hope. You just need to take those killer moves off of the old dance floor and bring them to a new one.

You should be utilizing this spotlight through online tools like social networking and mobile blogging, while communicating with and expanding your audience.

These tools are now globally recognized and universally accepted as arguably the most direct and effective ways of connecting with your customers and building your brand.

Reaching your clients ten years ago was a much different game than reaching them now. Consumers danced to a much different beat back then. What’s the big difference? Why is the music changing so rapidly at the big dance? The reason is the newest members on the dance card….”social networking” and it’s dance partner “mobile media.”

With these new moves bumping and thumping their way all over the dance floor, how do businesses get to dance the boogie or the woogie with Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter, without tripping over their two left feet?

Easy, you invite them all to the party!
